HJS Garage Equipment accepts no liability for any DIY installations of our range of car lifts and refurbished equipment, although we supply all fixings and fitting instructions with our lifts we do not recommend that you install the equipment yourself as this will not provide your business with a certified installation certificate.

Should you decide to carry out a self-installation please be aware that our range of CE certified car lifts are very heavy and will require several people to safely lift the columns into place, due to the extensive weight this task should never be attempted by a single person.

The Garage Equipment Association has outlined a specific set of guidelines that should be strictly adhered to whenever attempting to install a vehicle lift, these guidelines are listed below.

Regulations That Govern the Installation and Use of Vehicle Lifts in the Workplace (LOLER) (PUWER)

LOLER regulations state that place a duty of care upon people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment in the workplace.

The regulations govern all businesses whose employees use vehicle lifting equipment, whether owned by them or not.

LOLER has been written to ensure that all lifting operations involving any form of lifting equipment is correctly planned, installed and executed planned by a competent trained persons, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe and professional manner.

LOLER states that all equipment used for lifting vehicles is fit for purpose, correctly marked with a Safe Working Load (SWL) label and is subject to statutory periodic examination and testing which must be thoroughly documented and any defects found reported directly to the person responsible for the equipment, the garage owner/manager and the relevant enforcing bodies.

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), any business who supplies work equipment for use by their employees has a duty of care under (PUWER) this regulation requires that all equipment provided by a company is;

• Fit for its intended purpose.
• Safe to operate and is regularly maintained in a safe condition and thoroughly inspected to ensure it is correctly installed and does not subsequently deteriorate.
• That the equipment is only ever used by competent people who have received all of the relevant information, instruction and training.
• That all of the required Health and Safety have been put in place to do all that is reasonably possible to control and minimise risks, these will normally include emergency cut out devices, adequate means of isolation from sources of energy, clearly visible markings and warning devices.
• That the equipment is only ever used in accordance with its design parameters and for its intended purpose.

How Can I Ensure That My Vehicle Lift Installation Complies with Relevant Legislation?

You can protect yourself and your business by arranging for one of our fully qualified lift installation engineers to attend your business premises and install the lift for you ensuring total compliance with all recognised and relevant rules and regulations.

HJS Garage Equipment cannot accept any liability whatsoever for any personal injury or damage to equipment that are a direct result of DIY installations of any of our range of CE certified vehicle lifts.

The supply of 2 Post and 4 Post Lifts by our company is completed with the expectation that they will only ever be installed by a fully competent garage equipment engineer in accordance with the manufactures instructions.

Car Lift Electrical Installations.

HJS Garage Equipment accepts no liability with regards to the electrical connection of your new and refurbished vehicle lifts, it is a legal requirement that all electrical works within a workplace are carried out and certified by a fully qualified electrician and meets the British Standard for electrical safety, BS7671.

HJS Garage Equipment stress that all electrical installation and connection works are left to a fully qualified electrician because, an incorrect supply connection may cause damage to the electric motor. Attempting to undertake electrical connection to the lift yourself is extremely dangerous, with the potential for serious injury and even death.

Powering your Car Lift Single or Three Phase?

Domestic properties typically feature a 230v single phase power supply and will require an independent 30 amp fuse installed into your fuse box similar to an electric oven – providing power direct to your vehicle lift. When installing one of our vehicle lifts into a commercial workshop you will more than likely have a 415v three phase power supply from which an electrician would be install.

It is therefore very important that upon placing your order with HJS Garage Equipment that you are aware of which type of power supply is available within your premises so we can ensure that you get the correct  motor for your specific purpose all of the vehicle lifts supplied by HJS Garage Equipment are available in single and three phase.

2 Post lifts.

It alerts Enforcing Authorities to the risks of vehicles falling from 2-post lifts in motor vehicle repair facilities and outlines the key safeguards to safe operation. It explains action that has already been taken by the industry and some emerging issues that visiting staff may wish to be aware of.

4 Post Lifts

Different rules apply for 4 post lifts depending on the size and requirements of your garage. See more information on our 4 post lifts page.

Car Scissor Lifts

Scissor lifts tend to be smaller and easier to move around even going outside if the weather permits. Some allow you to either lift by the wheels as per a 4 post lift or leave the wheels dangling like a 2 post lift perfect for working on wheels and brakes. Again you have no posts in the way of doors ideal for bodywork repairs.

These lifts lie flat on the garage floor when not in use and the low profile allows you to park your vehicle over them when not being used. You should be aware that because the lifting mechanism of some scissor lifts are under the lift you cannot stand directly beneath the vehicle when it’s raised, but they are a popular choice and should be considered.

Daily maintenance and safe operation of your Vehicle Lift

The operator should ensure that a daily visual and physical inspection of the lift is carried out in accordance with (BS 7980), prior to lifting any vehicles you should;

• Visually inspect the chains and ropes ensuring that they are free of any obvious signs of wear or in need of adjustment.
• Perform a thorough visual and physical inspection and testing of the lifts hydraulic systems by checking for any signs of hydraulic oil leaks near couplings or signs of damage to hose and by raising and lowering the lift prior to loading ensuring correct working condition.
• Check arm support pads for signs of wear.
• Raise the lift above 100 mm and physically check that the arm locking mechanism is engaging as it should prior to loading the car lift.

Monthly maintenance of your Vehicle Lift

The lift operator should ensure that a monthly service is carried out that covers the thorough lubrication and tightening of all;

• Chains.
• Ropes.
• Rollers.
• Carriage Pins.
• Anchor Bolts.

Six Monthly Maintenance of Your Hydraulic Car Ramp

A six monthly service of all car lifts operating within a workplace must be carried out by garage owners/managers in order to remain compliant with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER.)
